Although this show was only written in 1992, it is a compilation of Gershwin songs uplifted from shows, dating back to the 1920s so it was a revelation to hear how this group of talented youngsters coped with a style of music which was popular long before they were born - but cope they did - exceptionally well! From the very colourful opening the production progressed with seamless scene changes and outstanding choreography through to a very crowded finale with the entire company dressed in white - what a spectacle! Robbie Scott and Megan Mackenzie in the leading roles of Bobby Child and Polly Baker were superb, both in their singing and acting, not to mention more than competent dancing - for example Bobby's "I Can't be Bothered" with the amazing young dancing girls! - and Megan particularly convincing in her expressions, command of the stage and marvellous interpretation of such classics as "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "But Not for Me." Other principals were equally impressive with lovely characterisation from Jack McCreadie (Lank), Katrina Harris (Irene), Joe Reid (Bela) Lucy Cowie and Kirsty McNaughton (Tess and Patsy), Calum Harris (Everett) Lois Adamson (Lottie) and a charming cameo from Kate Riddoch as Patricia Fodor, the writer with her band of Girl Guides! The two Belas' "What Causes That" was particularly well rehearsed and performed. With a well drilled chorus and dancing troupe, excellent costumes and sets and a top class orchestra, this was an evening of non-stop musical theatre at its very best. Thank you AYMT!
