This was an ambitious project and from the opening number it was clear that we were in for a treat. Under the superb direction of John Bettesworth and with impressive choreography by Jackie Willis the cast kept the pace going well. They were well supported by an excellent orchestra under the direction of Ian Peters.
Andrew Warner gave a good performance of Stephen/Tony. He has great natural stage presence and his singing was strong and well delivered. He was well supported by Emma Wilson as Samantha/Lola and she really did light up the stage. Her singing was strong when it needed to be and gentle and lyrical when the plot required it.
Chris Brooke was an absolute delight as nightclub owner Sam Silver and his performance displayed a good talent for comedy. Sarah Pilbeam was terrific as Gladys showing a range of facial expressions that enhanced her acting.
Baddie Rick Castelli played by Roger Keevil showed great style and menace with excellent stage presence and his characterisation of the part was strong and quite sinister, which is exactly what it should be. Simone Denby as Conchita gave a wonderful all round performance. They were all well supported by a lively group of showgirls and a chorus who sang and acted well throughout.
The overall production well supported by a excellent back stage team, good technical work with the lighting generally well timed and good volume balance throughout.
