In my opinion(!), this year the society’s annual Spring Concert show opened with the best-ever musical selection ever! And that was because it featured my all-time favourite musical show – “Showboat”! Sadly, this show is very seldom seen these days due to certain casting “restrictions”, but that doesn’t stop any musical group from performing the wonderful and fabulous songs . . . and Broughty, on stage in serried ranks assembled, brought them alive, in a grand musical manner with a wonderful melodic sound as they sang out old favourites “Ol’ Man River”, “Why Do I Love You?”, and “Make Believe”. It was tremendous! Then, this ‘concert’, suddenly, transformed itself into a full-blown musical production (a welcome dimension) when some of the company danced and sang their way through more enjoyable musical shows – “Mary Poppins” (umbrellas to the fore); “Me And My Girl” (a lively Lambeth Walk dance) and an impressive “My Fair Lady” section. Then we were off on a tapping “42nd Street” from the Dancers, followed by an excellent selection of musical numbers from “Evita”; a Lloyd Webber musical extravaganza, and ending up with a great selection of musical numbers from “Jersey Boys”. The show did not have a star performer because they were all star performers! Suffice to say, all the soloists were in fine voice for their respective numbers and the “Money Money” item was one of the show’s highlights. It made for a memorable, melodic, evening and, as one person nearby me said – “What a great night, and not a sign of anything from “Les Mis” ! To quote one of the show’s songs . . . “Oh What A Night” it all was. Great entertainment!
