My first visit to Kelty Musical Association was to see one of my favourite show Come from Away. Based on true stories, the show is set in the days following the heartbreaking events of 11 September 2001 when 38 planes are diverted to Gander, Newfoundland following the closing of US airspace.
With a cast of just 19 and all playing multiple roles this is very much an ensemble piece that reinforces the themes of community and human kindness and highlights that love, friendship and laughter can still be found, even in the darkest of times.
With no natural breaks the show starts with the resounding Welcome to the Rock and takes you on a roller coaster of emotions delivering real highs and lows as we follow the stories of locals and plane people alike. Each member of the cast delivered performances they should all be very proud of - accents (Newfoundland is not easy) were maintained throughout made even more difficult as they switched often in the blink of an eye from character to character. Each character was clearly defined helping the story to flow naturally.
Singing throughout was impressive both in solo and company number – harmonies were crisp, diction clear and the blend in company numbers a joy to listen to. The band backing all this was in fine form capturing the true spirit of the score and adding greatly to the overall quality of the show.
Choreography was imaginative and slick with not a step out of place helping to enhance the production further.
With no breaks and scenes and characters changing before you the show requires a Director with a clear vision. That vision was delivered by the talented cast to ensure the story and the characters were the stars of the show. Every character was believable – so important when telling real stores of real often heartbreaking events – I’m not ashamed to say I found the show extremely moving at times balanced by moments of real out loud laughter. The simple set along with a few additional items of furniture and props ensured the pace of the show never dropped.
Thank you to Kelty for a most memorable first visit – I very much look forward to many more.
