This inspirational and original programme of musical numbers from Disney stage productions was cleverly compiled by Kenneth Pinkerton and offered some numbers which were less familiar than the standard songs often expected when thinking about the animated Disney films. The evening got off to a stirring start with the powerful voice of Ellie Mckearnon and the company encircling the audience in 'The Circle of Life' and it's hair raising vocal harmonies. Throughout the evening we were treated to some first class solo and ensemble work as well as some excellent chorus numbers. When soloists were singing the company was well placed in groups in the performing area and were totally focused on what was going on thus enhancing the solo performances. Subtle movements also allowed great interaction and there was the feeling that everyone was involved in every number. The standard of singing was consistently high and so it is perhaps a little unfair to single out individuals but Rachael Flynn and Colin Richardson were particularly outstanding in their duet 'Written in the Stars' (Aida) and their solo numbers 'Part of your World' (The Little Mermaid) and 'Me' (Beauty and the Beast). It was most refreshing to hear numbers from Tarzan and Newsies which were new to me as well as the more well known Mary Poppins selection. 'Santa Fe' and 'Seize the Day' from Newsies were well delivered by Andrew Todman and Kenneth Pinkerton and gave me a taste of a show which I look forward to seeing in the future.
Great credit must once again be given to this company for their skillful use of B.S.L. which was incorporated in every number. The choreography using integrated signing is still fascinating to watch and must be so difficult to master. Special mention must be given to those signing for solo performers. There was a tremendous rapport between singer and signers who were so enthusiastic and animated in interpreting the musical numbers.
A grand finale with 'Endless Night' (The Lion King) and 'Anything Can Happen' (Mary Poppins) brought this most enjoyable concert to a wonderful conclusion. Congratulations to the entire cast and production team for once again delighting the audience with this impressive evening of song. I look forward to the next production.
