It had all the ingredients of a traditional pantomime. However this was anything but a traditional pantomime. Bawtry Phoenix Theatre need to be congratulated on a very brave choice of Christmas pantomime. Cinderella and the Two Ugly Slags, was vulgar, crude and I loved it.
Ryan Brown was a very charming Prince Stiffington, who was was always looking for the right girl to sow some wild oats with. Ryan also displayed some fantastic vocals which was treat to listen to. Ryan was partnered with Hannah Laszkowicz, who made a perfect Cinderella, complete with glass ‘crocs’. The transformation from rags to ball gown was wonderful and praise must go to wardrobe mistress, Tina Witherden, for making such a wonderful costume.
I also had my part to play as ‘Barry’ the object of the Sisters desire, but more about the terrible twosome later. Steve Adams, played Baron Hardon, Cinderella’s put upon father. Steve displayed good comedy timing, and performed really well, considering he had to put up with a permanent prop, down his trousers. The cheer from the audience I would expect be heard in neighbouring towns when he told the Stepmother to ‘do one’ Jane Wheatley was wonderfully wicked as the evil stepmother, Syphillis. A character everyone loved to hate, and one that I wouldn’t want to meet on a dark night. The loveable Buttons was played with so much enthusiasm and energy by Will Wheatley. Will was more than comfortable talking directly to the audience and making sure we knew to remind him to water his weed!
The stars of this show, however was the brilliant Andy Kemp and Charlotte Fricker as the Ugly Sisters, Vee & Dee. These two gave us a comedy masterclass and you could feel the audiences excitement every time they appeared. They were, rude, crude and hysterical. Great job.
The main cast were well supported by Donna Beckett (Fairy), Karen Plant (Town Cryer), and Tom Proctor (Waiter/Tree)
Congratulations to directors, Jonah Thomson and Heather Wragg, it was a great evenings entertainment.
