Those of us who love and support the theatre in its widest forms and importantly amateur theatre can only be encouraged by seeing young performers on stage and the impact youth theatre has both now and almost certainly way into the future

Keeping this European classic familiar tale fresh and appealing to an audience given all the adaptations Cinderella has had over the years is a tough call. This quality production with its own individuality and charm had at its heart the essential storyline underpinned by a well-chosen selection of musical pieces to suit every taste. The result being one of a show delivering a fine example of a traditional pantomime by this extremely talented group

An abundance of atrocious one liners, the hallmark of good pantomime was in evidence throughout the show. Scott Jennings in the role of ‘Buttons’ bantered with the audience engagingly as did Joe Logan and Sam Cox as ‘Maxi’ & ‘Mini’ .All three characters provided pleasing humour and fun enhanced for the comedy duo by vivid vibrantly coloured costume and make up. Also on the comedy front was a memorable performance by Edie Davies as ‘Porsche’, particularly with the ensemble in “9 to 5”

Ellie Jai Hawthorne was excellent as ‘Cinderella’ and in the role of ‘Prince Charming’ and ‘Dandini’ Eleanor Ham & Eleanor Burke respectively were a delight. None more so than in their duet “Together Wherever We Go”. Other excellent vocal performances came from ‘Buttons’ with “Put on a Happy Face” and opening up Act 2 “Nobody Loves a Fairy When She’s Forty” sung with great character and artistry by D’Arcy Sparrow as ‘Fairy Godmother’

Other characters notable of comment were ‘Soapflake’ played by Emily Ewins, and ‘The Baroness and Dance Captain’ sung and danced with gusto by Jenna Simpson, including “Mother knows Best” and with all the ‘Villagers’ ending a pacey Act One with “I Wish I May”

This was a production that owed much of it success to all on stage, too numerous to mention who individually gave some special performances in their portrayal of character and musicality combined with excellent choreography. The ensemble scenes were robust and engaging performed with great energy and enthusiasm for the whole show. All supported by a well-balanced orchestra that allowed the excellent score to be performed well.

Behind the scenes too the technical team took full advantage of a recent major investment in lighting facilitating inspirational set and scene changes. The inclusion also of innovative costume initiatives must be applauded highlighted in the transformation scene for Cinderella’s ball gown. It was superb and “all done with magnets”

It was a pleasure to be a member of a most receptive and appreciative audience and thanks for a warm welcome and a thoroughly entertaining evening. Above all many congratulations to the young people and all at BYT.
