This version of one of my favourite pantomimes, with a script by company member Trevor Nicol and song lyrics, to well known tunes, by director Caroline Nicol was a true example of community theatre at it’s best. The action, on the colourful storybook like sets, was fast paced and never dragged. Benedict Donnelly was a truly bouncy Buttons and had a good rapport with the audience. Rhia Mackenzie was a delightful and gracious Cinderella putting up with the harshness of her Stepmother and Stepsisters. Aileen Hendry was excellent as the money grabbing Baroness Hardup and due to her it was very easy to feel sympathy for Jonathan Stuart’s put-upon Baron Hardup. The Ugly Sisters Mandolina and Randolphina, played by brothers Nicholas and Trevor Nicol, were truly outrageous flirting with every man on stage, and in the audience, and ever ready with a witty put down and withering look. The stage was graced by two leggy Principal Boys in Sophie Maxtone’s Prince Charming and Fiona McDonald’s thigh slapping aide-de-camp Dandini. Dandini also had the thankless task of keeping an eye on the hapless comedy duo of Bud and Lou, played by Gerry Sutton and Morag Barron respectively, whose antics had the audience roaring with laughter. The job of making sure we had a happy ending was in the safe hands of Fiona Chapman’s Fairy Godmother. Singing and dancing from both principals and chorus were excellent. Well done everyone for a first class show.
