Excellent colourful scenery and costumes, a delight for the eye, well cast principals to bring out the best of the story line and comedy side of Peter Denyer’s script, an evening of fun and enjoyment much appreciated by those in the packed hall.
What a delightful young Cinderella (Michelle Barker) with the looks and voice and definitely the ‘sympathy vote’ for her treatment throughout, and how glamorous she looked in that ball gown, every little girls’ dream. We loved her best friend and support team of Buttons, played with great energy and appeal to the younger audience members, good singing, and good timing throughout, Tom Corfield was ideal in this role. And as the suitor Prince, Marion Jackson matched vocally so well with Cinderella, certainly a perfect partnership. Also the other half of the ‘boys’ in disguise as the Prince and Dandini (Robin Baines) exchanged their roles and generally added to the fun and chaos in some situations. The Fairy Godmother (Julie Barker) worked her magic in her own way and kept the story line going to the right conclusion. Davin Ivins gave a strong interpretation to the Baron Hardup role with his love for the daughter totally overwhelmed by the personality and powerful voice of his new love the Baroness (Judi Ingram) in a ‘mother from hell’ done with great style. And topping everything on stage with their amazing costumes and makeup and OTT personalities and comedy timing, as Mona and Grizelda, Pam Facey and Lynette Foreman just stole every scene in which they appeared as the step sisters that no-one should have to endure, the horrific would-be lovers for the Prince and Dandini: they were excellent. Good company numbers with some good singing voices within the company, and great enthusiasm from all on stage throughout meant a lively rendition of the pantomime in true tradition.
