This production of 'Cinderella' was effective throughout, with a committed principal cast, energetic ensemble, and a production team that clearly worked cohesively to deliver an enjoyable and engaging pantomime.
Abbi Pritchard gave a lovely performance in the title role. She has an enjoyable singing voice, moved confidently, and spoke very clearly throughout. Her portrayal was warm and sincere, creating a likeable and engaging Cinderella. Jessica Baird-Swinburn was a great Buttons, maintaining excellent rapport with the audience and confidently helping to keep the story moving. Her interaction and energy were key to sustaining the panto atmosphere.
Ciara Beighton delivered a strong Prince Charming, with a lovely singing voice and confident stage presence. Her rapport with both Cinderella and Dandini worked very well, and the traditional thigh-slapping panto moments were played with assurance. Wayne Perry’s Dandini developed well as the performance progressed, with the character growing in confidence and presence throughout the evening.
Liz Woolley and Karen Jones formed an effective and entertaining partnership as Bodget and Leggett. With characterisations reminiscent of the Mario Brothers, they provided strong comic support and kept the action moving at a good pace.
Jack Woolley put a great deal into his portrayal of Baron Hardup. His physical transformation, particularly the hair and overall appearance, convincingly conveyed the character’s age, and his commitment to the role was evident and Regina Repton also gave a good performance as the Baroness.
Patricia Church and Sally Tickner-Mellor were well matched as Grizelda and Gertrude the Stepsisters. The character voices were strong, with particularly excellent pronunciation and clear character work from Grizelda. The comedy teeth and costumes enhanced their appearance, creating a visually effective and entertaining pair.
Jake Perry demonstrated compelling characterisation as Hagan the Horse, with excellent energy and rapport with audience members of all ages. The costume was very eye-catching and added to the overall success of the character. Yvonne Baird fulfilled the role of Fairy G within the story, and Gary Rowley supported the action well as Chambers.
The ensemble and dancers worked great as a group. Their enjoyment was evident and communicated clearly to the audience. The choreography by Sharon Stringer was energetic, lively, and well executed, incorporating a variety of dance styles and effective hand choreography.
Under the direction of Angela Swift, the production was well staged, with much of the action thoughtfully played to the front to allow strong audience engagement. Musical Director Jo Baird-Swinburn ensured the music supported the production effectively, and it was particularly pleasing to see a live band.
Costumes, designed and sought by Patricia Church and her team enhanced the portrayals well. Stage management by John Woolley and his team ensured the performance ran smoothly and lighting by Lee Hartshorn and sound by the Landau Forte College operators supported the production appropriately. The programme was a delight to read, so imaginative and informative.
Overall, this was an enjoyable pantomime with strong central performances, enthusiastic ensemble work, and a committed production team delivering an entertaining evening for its audience. Thank you for inviting us to a lovely evening of entertainment.
