CINDERELLA.
This version of the age old story of Cinderella is the 32nd pantomime produced and directed by Allan and Janet Scott. This year’s story was adapted and written by Janet and Allan and had a contemporary setting and characters. I particularly liked Allan's minimalist use of set and scenery and the excellent use of projections for scene changes. There was some original music and was dubbed with the cast members singing along and this gave the songs a good strong sound.
The small cast had this story down to a T and were all excellent. I can’t really single out any one individual as they were all as good as each other, and the casting pairings worked well. The ugly sisters Constance and Patricia were superbly played by Brian McArthur and Jason Reekie and their costumes were spectacular. Their mummy the wicked stepmother, Delphine (Colin Wilson) had Ella’s dad George (Tommy Thomson) round her little finger by casting a spell over him so he will do anything he is told. She does get her come uppance in the long run when Faye Goodie (fairy godmother) played by Cath Monk gets the better of her and she becomes good. The ever present Jim Gordon was very good as always as the Young Princes mentor/conscience. These four actors are all very experienced which showed in their portrayal of the parts they played. Idris Dean and Joyce Reekie who played King Bob and Queen Margot excelled in their roles along with everyone else. The three mice Maw, Paw and wee Morag (Alison Murdoch, Emma Middleton and Meghan Whalen) were the scene changers and interlude distractions whilst costumes were changed etc. And of course not forgetting Gretal the Cat who slept throughout the whole proceedings. Well done Linda Gordon. Which brings me to Ella and Prince Danny. Stephanie Drummond and Gavin Millar have become stalwart members of The Fullarton and they carried out their parts as the love interest who all live happily ever after with great aplomb. Great singing voices all round and excellent stage presence.
A most entertaining evening with a different slant on the age old story which was a pleasant change and it was obvious that the full house enjoyed the night as much as I did. Well Done and thank you Castle Douglas.
