After a two year enforced lockdown, Great Barr MTC were back with another hit production, ‘Cinderella’.
With outstanding singing and acting this production was sure to be a sure fire hit. Even though this is a small company they are big on talent and first time director Emily Paine used this to their full advantage. Leading the company was Laura Ellis as Cinderella and Emily Paine as Prince Charming who worked so well together. They were very well supported by Craig Smith and Jim Nuttall as Buttons and Dandini. The ugly sisters, Asphyxia (Emily Stephens) and Euthanasia (Alex Bates) were as nasty as they could be to poor Cinders and how the audience booed them. The costumes these two wore were superb, and all credit should go to the two costume designers for the company. Comedy came in the form of the broker’s men, Ammer and Tongs played by Anne Hewitt and Jo Coffin. These poor ‘men’ didn’t stand a chance when the two ugly sisters came after them. The Baron and Baroness Hardupp (Maureen Bower and Joanne Rhodes) again were a good pairing and bounced off each other well. The poor Barron was really under her thumb.
It’s not very often that you have the fairy godmother played by a man with a beard in a tutu, but this is what happened when Olly Clark played the part and he played it well. Good support also came from Sandra Bisseker and Annette Bird.
Costumes for this production were very effective and colourful and the scenery, through minimalistic was effective.
What gave this company the edge was the singing. It was beautiful and all of the ensemble numbers were in perfect harmony.
Well done to all of the production team, the back stage crew and everyone else involved in this production. You gave a cracking evening’s entertainment and how the audience loved you.
Welcome back Great Barr MTC, you have been missed.
