The fairy tale of Cinderella is one I think we all know and love – but this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical is definitely not panto and this production was definitely not amateur in any way, shape or form. It was a classic evenings entertainment, that had audiences beaming from cheek to cheek from start to finish.
Mark Allan (Director & choreographer) brought this tale to life not only with actors and singers telling us the story, but he also involved the very clever use of puppetry throughout the production which gave extra interest for the audience to follow.
Susan Wilcock gave a faultless performance as the Fairy Godmother. Her vocals are undeniably as spellbinding as her characterisation.
Evie Clark as Cinderella was just beautiful. Her stunning singing voice just soared effortlessly through her musical numbers – she was just perfect for this part.
Her stepmother and sisters – superbly played with comedic timing by Loretta Marklew, Kristie Shaw (Joy) and Chloe Judge (Grace) were a feisty trio and worked so well together.
Gabriel Jones as The Prince gave a confident and commanding performance, and with stunning vocals he was a joy to listen to.
With brilliant comedic support from Ted Killan as Lionel, the princes suitor, along with Helen Smith as Queen (the princes mother) and Andrew Howorth as King (the princes father) – the principle line up was so very strong.
There was also a very strong ensemble, wing singers and puppeteers to portray this familiar story – however, the most striking thing about this whole production was the “style” of the whole thing. Fantastic costumes, wigs, make up, hats, accessories – all “steam punk” which brought a brilliant edge to the production. This was all wrapped up in stylish choreography by the entire cast.
The set, props, lighting effects and sound were absolutely superb. Everyone could be heard so clearly – even though the storyline is familiar it is still really important to be able to hear the dialogue either through song or spoken word – and every single note sung or spoken could be heard with such clarity.
The orchestra under the magical care of John Sandland played their way effortlessly through this beautiful score – never overpowering the performers.
Congratulations everyone on a beautiful piece of theatre, and the clever way in which you brought this familiar story to life. It was indeed enchanting from start to finish!
