Pantomime has been an annual tradition in the Bruce household for over 30 years. As with all pantomimes certain roles are absolutely crucial, Cinderella is no exception.
Exhibit A: Buttons - Nigel Davies absolutely lived the part of Button's, his timing and delivery were superb, very much revelling in the role.
Cinderella, Lucy Chidlow was sweet and lovely, an easy target for the Baddie, The Baroness, Russel Latham; glamourously manipulative, nasty and vindictive to all bar her precious daughters the ugliest of sisters, Grizelda and Mona Hardup; Mark Williams and Andrew Murray.
Derek Harrison, Baron Henry Hardup, her sometimes cowering new husband, delivered some wickedly witty one liners.
Prince Charming, Maria Robinson-Lea; and Dandini, Jane Bebbington, had a really effective rapport helping to sell the tale.
All of which was held firmly together by The Fairy Godmother, Linda Campbell.
Great support from the rest of the cast particularly in the hunting scene, which was a real hoot – the cheeky fox was very well played, leading the hunt a merry dance.
All in all Cinderella was exactly what you'd expect it to be, lavish fun and nonsense escapism, lots of audience participation, “Oh no there wasn't”, “Oh yes there was”! Which I find is a very welcome diversion from day to day life.
Technically, there were some late mic cues, which could have been simple first night things, but an annoying noise issue with one or two of the main characters radio mics, which may have been something like a simple battery issue, really did detract at times as it was so promient.
That said, we thoroughly enjoyed the show
This was a very fitting tribute to Kay Ikin – WAODS did you proud Kay
