A good script by Alan Frayn, and a cast with so much enthusiasm. A bright and colourful opening with everyone singing ‘Hello, Hello It’s Panto Time Again’, this familiar story was played out delightfully. The principle cast line up was strong, Faye Hill was lovely as the Fairy Godmother, she waved her wand very effectively. We all felt sorry for the plight of Baron Hardup ‘Jackson Taylor Smith’, in his domestic arrangements with the Baroness and his stepdaughters, she certainly was a mother in favour of her daughters, not poor Cinderella. Amy Shepherd was superb in this role and her singing was great. I really enjoyed the performance given by Molly Cowley as Cinderella, she was all that one wants in a principle girl, and the transformation from rags to ballgown looked lovely, and with Jess Walmsley as Prince Charming they worked well together.
The comedy element was provided by James Mason ‘Grizelda’, and Thomas Kidd ‘Gertrude’, well done both of you, Tom Shepherd was a loveable Buttons, I also thought that Martha Rand gave good support as Dandini. There was very strong support from the rest of the cast, special mention must go to Emily Kate Unsworth as Leggett who is a star in the making, she really can engage an audience, and that is no mean feat.
There was plenty of ‘It’s Behind You’, ingredient when Euan Adams as ‘The Ghost’ was on stage. What a lot of good musical numbers with the chorus, ‘There’s Something About a Solider’, ‘The Fox Hunt’, and many more. A very enthusiastic young chorus that performed energetic dance routines and not forgetting Hagan the Horse well done both of you.
The sets were good, especially the coach scene, the production moved along at an admiral pace with bright costumes, lively routines and tuneful songs. A very entertaining pantomime.
Thank you for your hospitality over the years, and I was not expecting to be invited on stage at the finale – what a surprise, and what a lovely gift you gave me. Thank you so much and all best wishes for the future.
