In 1978 a group of local people performed a pantomime in the small Lincolnshire town of Crowland with the intention of raising funds for their open air swimming pool. Following on from this event Crowland Amateur Dramatic Society was formed which, since then, has produced a variety of productions that has always included an annual pantomime, apart from 2014, when the venue they used for their shows was unavailable due to major refurbishment work being carried out. It is most heartening that such a large number of young people continue to present themselves at the auditions seeking to be selected to appear in the annual pantomime. In this 2016 production of “Cinderella” there was a chorus comprising of 39 youngsters who, having learned all the words and tunes of the songs, ‘sang their hearts out’ and executed the choreographed routines with precision and energy, their splendid costumes contributing much colour and atmosphere to this large scale production. All the principals were well-cast, superbly costumed and delivered appropriate characterisation which prompted the vociferous audience to make suitable responses; there was indeed much audience participation and several local references were included in the script. The scenery was well designed and sturdily constructed, the lighting plan was very effective and there was well-timed use of pyrotechnics; the stage crew carried out their duties efficiently. This was a most enjoyable show with a happy ending that lifted the spirits. Thank you all who were involved in providing this great entertainment.
