Myself and my guest braved storm Darragh to go to the Christmas Spectacular by Rochdale Phoenix Opera Society. The church was warm and welcoming with stunning stained glass windows and a lovely Christmas tree with multi coloured twinkling lights - a perfect setting for a Christmas concert. Jon Gibson was Musical Director/ Choir Master in charge of 27 musical numbers â no mean feat. Even when it was a soloist he was with them every step of the way doing their counts and giving them a reassuring nod and smile. There were three different people playing the various piano accompaniments and there was even someone playing the church organ for a few of the numbers .
Peter Fitton was MC for this concert and certainly delivered some jovial and topical patter in between the songs. The choir started with some strong note attack and some fabulous enunciation. I was delighted to be able to hear the âTâ sounds within the word Christmas. The harmonies were distinct as they melded together. The music selection was a beautiful meander through both songs and carols and it was a very nice touch when the audience were invited to join in. The attack that started the concert kept up through both the first half and the second half , for me personally both halves were a little bit lengthy but when we can only sing these songs at Christmas time just where do you begin to cut songs out? The audience certainly enjoyed them all as well as the mulled wine and mince pies served at the interval! All the soloists delivered their songs well and I saw some lovely connection with the audience.
Myself and my guest enjoyed your performance and I look forward to seeing you all again very soon.
