Congratulations – and thank you for an evening of excellent entertainment. A full house on the first night!
Guy Jones as Paul Morris – was very convincing as the new arrival in the village, who tentatively auditioned for the local am-dram group’s production of ‘The Beggar’s Opera’. He transformed with increasing confidence through the ranks to take the lead role. An excellent transformation from relatively innocent newcomer into the seducer of the piece. Very funny – and excellent pace. Dafydd Ap Llewellyn – Christy Hinchcliffe – was suitably bombastic, with impeccable timing. He appeared to have a great time playing the larger than life Welsh director of the group’s am-dram offering. His lascivious wife Hannah, was excellently played by Lucie Nash. A lady who knew what she wanted and how to get it!
Peter Raine, making his directing debut with the Lindley Players, fashioned his cast well. Every one of the players remained characterfully engaging throughout. The musical interludes were a very special treat. On-point vocal performances by everyone involved. Congratulations to the musical director, Adrian Bawtree, who also played piano accompaniment throughout the production. Personally I found the unlit ‘scene changes’ in full-view distracting at times – maybe it was intended to highlight the ‘play within a play’ aspect? As always, the ‘Creative’ team enabled the production to run smoothly – serving their players well. The programme design is excellent - divided into two sections - one for the ‘show within the show’ – and turned over - introduces the Whitstable cast and creatives. The coming week's audiences are in for a treat.
