Chess follows the story of the American and the Russian in a heated game of Chess set in the middle of the Cold War.

The Principal cast is split in to three sections.

The West

Alex Lewis as Freddie Trumper plays an excellent role showing a range of emotions suitable to the character.

Laura Walsh as Florence Vassey plays the troubled character well expressing the characteristics required with ease.  Laura had great chemistry with both Richard Yates and Alex Lewis.  Laura also has a stunning vocal ability.

Andy Ward as Walter De Courcey, a slightly smaller role but nevertheless looking confident each time he appeared on stage and had good chemistry with those he interacted with.

The Chess Federation

Nathan Walsh as the Arbiter was an excellent choice for the role and channelling the right amount of stature and authority whilst telling you the story.

The East

Richard Yates as Anatoly Sergiesvky - a demanding role for which Rich showed the confidence and vulnerability of the character well.

Chad Fletcher as Alexander Molotov did not shy away from a Russian Accent and his ability to be able to keep this going during the songs should be congratulated by all. An enjoyable performance.

Libby Brookes as Svetlana Sergiesvky played the long-suffering wife of Anatoly well, and her duet with Laura Walsh was a highlight of the evening.

MTS continues to push the boundaries with set, and this was no exception, with an illuminated chess board as the floor, with the use of lights and costumes all adding to the effect.

The projection kept you advised of the story and what was happening throughout, and was a welcome addition as unfortunately due to the large band on stage this did make it difficult to hear the vocals.

All principal cast and chorus did an excellent job with the musical numbers and the choreography was outstanding.

Although I may have gone into the show not a big fan of Chess, I did enjoy the evening’s performance.
