This vibrant Rock Opera was superbly performed by a talented cast and ensemble has many highlights and was an excellent production. The story line itself may be a bit thin (like most musicals I suppose) covering the political aspect between USA and Russia and the love life of the protagonists both in love with same lady. The passion and emotion of the music and the tension of the International World Chess Final presents a very sophisticated show. The highly talented cast was superb, all having the vocal and acting ability to thrill an audience, most of whom had probably never seen this show before. In fact it has only been produced twice in my District in the last sixteen years. The lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulnae’s (Abba) bring a complexity and ever changing rhythms and melodies and a feast of fine music. The first act slowly engages the audience and closes with the well known evocative ‘Anthem’, superbly sung by Paul Tapley (Anatoly) and ensemble. The second act is much stronger and the principals revelled in the opportunity to sing such superb songs. Suzie Inskip (Florence) was simply wonderful having a very strong stage presence and delightful soprano voice. Tim Shackley (Frederick) the American chess master and his Russian opponent Paul Tapley (Anatoly) were excellent and it was good to see Maxine Cook (Svetlana) on stage again with her solo ‘Someone Else’s Story’ and duet with Florence ‘I Know Him So Well’ beautifuly sung and performed. Rob Brown (Walter) a scheming, humorous, performance,
Molokov (David Hemming) gave a fine, mature, understated portrayal sang well and maintained his Russian accent throughout. Nick Long( Arbiter) hit the high notes with ease and power. Ensemble singing and dancing/movement was excellent and the orchestral sound was perfect. Quality of Lighting and Sound enhanced the staging and the in house designed and built set was very effective.
The finale ‘Anthem’ by the whole Company was totally thrilling. The audience loved it and so did I.
