This play about a group of Cheshire ladies taking part in the London Moonwalk is based on a true story. It was written to raise the awareness of the large number of people in this country who organise, take part in and assist with charity walks.
The ladies in this production were well cast in the roles of Vicky (Louise Hewitt), Maggie (Helen Cartwright), Siobhan (Linda Askew), Hilary (Vicky Evans) and Yvonne (Sarah Diamond. The interaction between the characters ensured that plenty of humour was extracted from this funny yet often poignant story. There should have been six ladies taking part in the walk but one had to drop out. This gave an ideal opportunity for the man-crazy Vicky to take her latest squeeze Andrew (Brett Dewsbury).
There were excellent cameo performances from Jane Lake (Madge), Dave Beere (Ron) and Jamie Jones (Handsome Drunk). There was good support from Lisa Blakeley, Michelle Beere and Brian Washington as the race Marshalls and Natasha Walker as the Aerobics Instructor. Chris Flint provided a convincing ‘voice over’ as the railway station announcer.
I particularly liked the rhyming monologues from the cast as they commented on life and personalities. These were well presented.
Lighting, sound and costumes all combined to provide a good evening’s entertainment.
Well done and I hope that plenty of money was raised for charity.
