Celebrating the theatrical history of Trinity Theatre, Fred Caws compered and narrated the outstanding events of the past hundred years, introducing clearly and with pride each memorable gem. There were musical items and three sketches with an overall total of twelve ten minute interludes delivered by a large, well drilled cast.
Amongst the highlights were the `Oliver` selection which included a beautifully sung `As Long As He Needs Me`, a lively romp through `The Pirates of Penzance`, Paul Stevens excerpt from the `Mikado` and solos by Nicola Berryman whose voice is quite superb. A group of children added much amusement to the numbers in which they appeared, with one small boy who, for no apparent reason and unbeknown to those around him, stuck out his tongue at the audience and an even smaller boy who insisted on doing his own thing throughout, before being hauled back into line on each occasion by his older brother.
The whole show was presented as if it were a well rehearsed miscellany of songs and sketches. The ladies were dressed in long dark skirts and pretty tops whilst the men were less formally attired in casual shirts and trousers.
Identical folders housed the song sheets and scripts and the choral singing in particular was clear and melodious. The finale was a tribute to those who died in the first world war and the projected black and white clips slipped ingeniously from one to the next, creating an interesting flow of poignant images. Very sobering after such an otherwise joyful evening. .
