Taking centre stage, MLO returned to Caldervale High School to celebrate their 40th Anniversary reflecting back on past productions and musical revues to present a varied selection of popular songs from shows such as Calamity Jane, Hairspray, Les Miserables, Little Shop of Horrors, Me and My Girl, Oklahoma, The Lion King and Summer Holiday, whilst also remembering their first shows with a medley of songs from Gilbert and Sullivan Operas. John Bergin (President) paid tribute to founders, Alistair McLeod and Elizabeth Pearson and the entire company, which was originally known as Airdrie Academy Former Pupils Amateur Operatic Society, before changing its name to Monklands Light Opera in 1984. He was also joined by stalwarts Heather Stephens, Kathleen Gilmartin and Alan J Leslie, at various stages throughout the show who shared some personal memories and experiences associated with MLO over the years. I cannot single any person out in their performance however I must comment on the great sense of collective team spirit which was generated from the stage to which the audience expressed their delight. Best wishes in your 40th year and we look forward to your 2014 production, ‘The Wedding Singer’.
