~~This musical poses many challenges to a society, all of which were overcome with style in this production. Based on TS Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’ it tells the tale of a group of felines, The Jellicles, meeting to choose one of their members to go to the Heaviside Layer and return to a new life.
Entering the auditorium you immediately felt part of this larger-than-life junkyard, soon to be inhabited by a wonderful array of felines. From the very beginning the audience were mesmerised as the cast members created their own characters which were very different from each other. With this show movement at all times is key, not only during the musical numbers, and everybody maintained their characterisation throughout. Every cast member gave their all and it is not easy to single out individuals as each cat complemented one another to produce such a stunning and outstanding evening’s entertainment.
While everyone gave great performances, Alyssa Medalla as Grizabella performed Memory wonderfully. Other standout performances came from Joe Alexander (Munkustrap), Rachel Potter (Bombalurina), Kate Pink (Demeter) and Lucy John (Jemima). The ensemble played as big a part in keeping the feeling of the piece with everyone staying in character at all times.
Directed and choreographed by Richard Cox and Kayleigh Halloway, this young cast were in stunning costumes and beautiful makeup together with a wonderful set. The singing and dancing were of the highest standard and with the music provided under the direction of Charles Withall, this was musical theatre at it’s very best.
Congratulations to everybody involved in this wonderful production.
