Cats marked Coventry Youth Operetta Groups return to the Albany Theatre after four years of refurbishment.

This musical poses many challenges to a society, all of which were overcome with style in this production. With no companies providing a set to hire, the company set about making their own to great effect. The design left space for dancing and had levels to add interest. Providing costume and wigs for the whole cast, especially one of this size, can be very expensive; some clever handiwork ensured everyone had ears to be proud of. As there were so many cast members with solo lines it was impossible to give everyone a radio mic. This at times meant that some lines and songs weren’t as clear as others.

With this show the movement at all times is key and not only during the musical numbers. Kate Gavin as Choreographer and Artistic Director ensured the feline style of movement was carried through everything. From the most experienced solo dancer to the younger ensemble numbers the dancing was effective and a joy to watch.

There are many characters in this show giving lots of people a chance for a solo. While everyone gave great performances, Anna Morris as Grizabella performed Memory wonderfully. Other standout performances came from Josh Hale (Munkustrap), Charlotte Blakeman (Bombalurina), Ellie Moloney (Demeter) and Robyn Bury (Jemima).  The ensemble played as big a part in keeping the feeling of the piece with everyone staying in character at all times.

This is a production that showcased the talent this group has at every level of the cast. Add to this the ingenuity of the unseen creative minds and you have a great show.
