~~The pace of this comedy was well maintained thanks to the direction of Daniel Holyhead. In many ways I find it a strange play. It has a clever storyline with some funny lines, strong characters and amusing situations but every so often it seems to lapse into being silly for the sake of being silly. This is particularly noticeable in the first act.
The story centres on Eric Swan (Dale Roberts) as he tries to cover his tracks before being discovered for defrauding every possible benefit system. Dale was well cast in this part as he tried to keep his misdemeanours from everyone around him He was well supported, reluctantly, by Dave Brown (Norman Bassett) and Chris Gardner (Uncle George) The three of them working closely together, adopting various aliases, to try to convince the various authorities that everything was ‘above board’. Their main adversary, Mr Jenkins from the benefits office, was very well played by Graham Ward. There were also important contributions to the plot from Naomi Leeanne Millard (Linda Swan), Francis Corbett (Sally Chessington), Gerry Joyce (Dr. Chapman), Brian Lycett (Mr Forbright), Jill Simkin (Ms Cowper) and Rachel Holmes (Brenda Dixon.
The whole performance was supported by a substantial, solid set.
Well done to all involved!
