This farce, written by Michael Cooney, son of the well know legendary farce master Ray. It shows he has picked up loads of tips from dad and then loaded them into ‘Cash on Delivery’ every ounce of confusion, in a comedy that slowly turns increasingly more ridiculous and bizarre!
The show centers around Eric Swan who has been fooling the DSS for two years by claiming benefits for an army of fictitious lodgers, all of whom suffer disabilities of various forms which they can claim, and who have extended dependants with similar Disabilities !
His wife Linda is oblivious to all this and as the play starts, Eric finds that it is all getting too much and complicated, but as he tries to stop it gets worse.
There's lies, lies and more lies, people getting knocked out, mis-timings, mistaken identities, cross dressing and supposed dead bodies. You couldn't possible pack anymore in - in fact, halfway through the first half I wanted to scream out "STOP - " I cant take anymore”. But there's no denying it is ingeniously written and how Cooney ever remembered who had done what to whom and with what - I have no idea!
The cast are all super and it’s a tour de force of timing and slapstick for all of them.
Directors Shaun Baker and Steph Healey took this great farce and gave us a riotous evenings entertainment. Directing all the cast members to a very high standard indeed. So much so I will not single anyone out.
If this is your type of farce , and it did seem to be for all or most of the audience on Saturday, then you will love every nuance, twist and turn. So much so it gave me headache so I'm off to lie down in a darkened room!
