An over-full diary meant I saw the Dress Rehearsal, and I was very pleased with what I saw. Admittedly there were a few mistakes, but the cast would learn from them and I am confident the audiences would thoroughly enjoy this production. James Coleman was ideally cast as Billy Bigelow. His rendition of the Soliloquy was most impressive. Kerry Kingston and Pippa Stubbs, as Julie Jordan and Carrie Fisher, were very pleasing. Jim Burrows was suitably pompous as Mr Snow while Helen Gray was utterly believable as Nettie Fowler. All the other named characters portrayed their parts very well with excellent support from the chorus members and sympathetic accompaniment from the five-piece band. I was particularly impressed with the simplicity of the set. A back-screen showed moving clouds and other features while a goodly number of open wooden crates were utilised to create all manner of situations from an open doorway to various items of furniture. The costumes were in keeping with the era and the lighting plot was good. This would be a good show with tuneful music, pleasant dance routines and excellent acting. Well done.
