Just from perusing the programme, with a cast of 18 named principals and 31 chorus members, Aberdeen Youth Music Theatre’s Intermediate section’s “Carousel” looked as though it would be rousing and rollicking affair – and so it proved to be – but also with some beautifully handled sensitive moments from the young people. Stephanie Walker as Julie Jordan had a lovely voice and a very good stage presence as did Murray Hossick as the fairground barker Billy Bigelow. His rendition of the “Soliloquy” towards of the end of Act One was powerful. Brooke Smith as Carrie Pipperidge and Joshua Milne as her straight-laced intended Enoch Snow provided much of the laughter in the piece and their duet “When The Children Are Asleep” was delightful. Imogen Bews as the down to earth Nettie Fowler gave a very strong performance and after her rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” there was not a dry eye in the house. Another strong performance was given by Beth Kelly as the brassy Carousel owner Mrs Mullins. Strong support was given by Arran Proctor (Jigger Craigin), Georgia Dewsbury (Louise, Julie’s daughter), Alastair Eddie (Mr Bascombe), Aonghas Ewen (Starkeeper), Katie Hindle (Heavenly Friend) and Angus Hogg (Enoch Snow Jnr). The chorus singing was excellent especially in the full company numbers such as “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “A Real Nice Clambake”. The choreography was well executed especially in the busy opening “The Carousel Waltz” and the Ballet in Act Two. Congratulations to all for another wonderful production.
