The Auction Mart at Skipton was a unique setting for this production of Carousel. The use of the projection/TV screens with the “Carousel” introduction set the scene really well. Director/Choreographer Craig Cowdroy had some lovely ideas for this production.
The two leading ladies – Julie Jordan played by Helen Procter and Carrie Pipperidge played by Cressida Ford both acted out their scenes with ease and delivered their songs with confidence. I really liked their characterisations – in particular I loved how “ditzy” Carrie was!
Chrissee Platt gave a commendable performance as Mrs Mullin and her colourful costume was very striking.
Pam Normanton (the Society’s President) played Nettie Fowler with confidence and gave a beautiful rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
Colm Ferry gave a charming performance as Enoch Snow and worked really well together with “Carrie”. I loved their duet “When the Children are asleep”
Neil Hellewell played Jigger Craigin convincingly and remained totally in character, even when the audience were “booing” his character in the bows!
This show rests so heavily on a good leading man, and in Dale Chadwick playing the part of Billy Biggelow we certainly had someone who was in total control of this part. He delivered all of the emotions required for this complex character. He has a strong voice and gave a commanding performance.
The ensemble were well rehearsed and there were some lovely lively numbers in “June is busting out all over” and “Clambake”.
The orchestra, under the direction of Geoff Garrett blended well, and played sympathetically so that the principles and ensemble were heard clearly at all times.
This was a lovely show to celebrate the Society’s 90th year – congratulations to everyone involved. It was a very enjoyable evening for the whole audience.
