It was very nice to see Orrell Musical and Dramatic Society’s production of “Carousel” which is one of Rogers and Hammerstein's best known shows, it has in its score such iconic songs as “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “If I loved you”. This entertaining production directed by the talented Diane Jones produced some good enjoyable performances from the cast that included Claire Kirk who gave a good sound performance as the steadfast and resilient Julie Jordon, she was partnered by David Simm who was secure in the role of Billy Bigelow, giving a respectable rendition of the very difficult soliloquy and making good use of his acting and singing skills. Victoria Fairhurst gave an excellent portrayal of Carrie Pipperidge, Julie’s best friend and she was complimented well by David Jones who was very amusing as Enoch Snow her ambitious betrothed. David Prichard managed to get the balance right between the menacing and the comedy in his characterisation of Jigger Craigin and Diane Jones was spot on with the motherly yet jovial character of Nettie Fowler. Rachel Mcgunigle did well as Mrs Mullins the Carousel owner and Julie’s rival for the affections of Billy and Natalie Jones was very enjoyable in the part of young Louise Bigelow she is one to watch for in the future. The principal cast were well supported by the smaller roles and the chorus who also produced some very nice characterisations. All the cast performed with energy and enthusiasm and appeared to be enjoying themselves immensely and everyone worked hard to make this production a success
American accents were generally quite a good standard and the action and pace of the show was just right, diction and clarity of words were also excellent meaning the story could be followed easily.
The orchestra led by musical director Linda Scott played well at just the right level of sound and supported the cast excellently. Choreography by Jackie Webb was simple but effective and was executed well by the cast.
The set was minimalistic with the use of back projection to set the scene which was very effective, however I am not quite sure that there are palm trees on the New England shoreline. Costumes were very colourful looked nice and were just the right era and along with the excellent sound and lighting enhanced the production, well done to all the backstage crew.
Congratulations to director Diane Jones and to all the production team and everyone involved in this enjoyable entertaining production. Thank you for inviting us we had a lovely evening, hope to see you for your next production.
