There is an art in getting the balance of this tragic story right and Julie Mallaband certainly found it. She managed to extract all the humour from the characters and situations but never lost sight of the main theme of the story.
Nick Lawrence (Billy) and Jenny Barlow-Jennings (Julie) acted and sang superbly together and Nick’s rendering of The Soliloquy was a delight. The audience can always rely on James Pugh (Mr. Snow) to bring energy and fun to the stage and once again he didn’t disappoint. He was well matched in this by Kathy Coombes (Carrie) as she also showed us what a fine singing voice she has..Peter Beck (Jigger) was suitably dark and sinister. They were well supported by Vickie Belcher (Nettie), Clare Rainsford (Mrs. Mullins) and the children led by Natalie Haslam (Louise) and Chris Buckle (Enoch Snow Junior). I also liked the characterisations of Dave Madeley (Starkeeper) and Jordan Adams (Heavenly Friend). Well done to everyone else too for invaluable contributions.
The chorus singing was strong with some well executed movement. The balance between the orchestra and the stage was good with my only minor criticism being I thought that some of the songs were a little on the slow side. Lighting and sound were also effective as were the speedy scene changes with this large set.
Congratulations to all involved!
