This R&H musical with its mystical touch was the choice for the Society’s 90th Anniversary year. The show has difficulties to overcome – namely the Opening mime when the fairground is brought to life; the presentation of the big “Soliloquy” song; plus the Ballet; and “Up There”, amongst others. All were very successfully achieved. Playing her first main role, Amy Grieve’s Julie Jordan was a delight to watch and she perfectly caught the innocence of her role. As her beau, Marcus Wylie was a conceited and loving Billy Bigelow before paying the price for his misdeeds. And their daughter, Louise (Lauren Allardyce) fitted the bill perfectly, and showed her great ability in the ballet. Moments of light relief were in the very capable hands of Vicki Lorimer as madcap Carrie Pipperidge and Sandy Kennedy brilliantly playing Enoch Snow. There are “darker” characters in this show and Lisa Murray made an excellent Mrs Mullin, the widowed carousel owner with her eye for her barker; and Paul Campbell was nastiness personified as Jigger Craigin, causing much trouble wherever he went. The show’s anthem song “When You walk Through A Storm” was in the very safe hands of Jill Davidson’s kind and understanding Nettie Fowler. It all moved along nicely to reach its emotive finale. Finally, well done to the children performing on stage.
