It is always a pleasure to visit Largs AOS at the fabby Barrfields Pavilion Theatre, and on this occasion, to enjoy their production of the Rogers and Hammerstein classic Carousel. This wonderful musical is full of many memorable songs and possesses an ability to charm any audience. Billy (Andrew McRae) and Julie (Lily Ewing) as the main leads were outstanding. Both have exceptional voices, handling their solo numbers confidently, and blended their individual vocal style so well in the duets they shared.  During the first scene where Billy and Julie meet and fall in love was delivered confidently and as it is one of the longer scenes in the show, their stamina during it should be acknowledged. It was also impressive to read in the programme that this was Andrew’s first time performing in a musical. What a way to start and I am sure with this talent it won’t be his last musical experience. Although the Billy and Julie love story starts nicely high, it does dip, and Carousel explores some dark overtones in its storyline. However, with the characters of Carrie (Lynsey Ewing) and Enoch Snow (Andy Park) there is some excellent comic relief in their scenes together and within their song “When the Children Are Asleep”. Both Lynsey and Andy were excellent and together with the devilish Jigger (Stewart MacDougall) provided lovely lighter humorous moments in the show. Donna Laing gave a wonderfully strong Mrs Mullin and Janine Millward a warm and caring Nettie Fowler, with Janine superbly singing the showstopper “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. The set, costumes, lighting and sound were of a high quality which enhanced the overall production’s success. Every aspect of the production was great and alongside the principal characters were a host of supporting ensemble taking on the minor roles. It is also important to recognise the energy, commitment and quality demonstrated by the ensemble in all their scenes and especially the numbers “June is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “A Real Nice Clambake”.  They provided a brilliant support throughout the show with quality vocals, harmonies and movement. There was also a genuine look of enjoyment of all those performing. I would also like to commend the poster and programme design, which was very fresh and brought a colourful and modern twist to the traditional title.
