This is a small company to tackle such a demanding piece but what they lack in quantity they more than make up for in quality. This was a clever modernisation of this classic opera by director, Jessica Dalton. The cast had to work hard as, not only did they play principal roles, they also provided the ensemble singing. The singing, under Ethan Cruxton’s direction, was confident from start to finish, a testament to the hard work put in.
Philippa Cruxton (Carmen) showed what an incredible voice she has in a part that could have been written for her. She was well supported by Phoebe Jeanes (Frasquita) and Catherine Smith (Mercedes) and the three of them blended together perfectly. Charlie Cameron (Michaela) was delightful and had wonderful control in her singing. Matthew Jones (Jose) worked well with Philippa and Charlie and made his singing sound effortless. Tom Dalton (Escamillo) gave a powerful performance as the gang leader determined to woo the feisty Carmen. There was strong support from Lee Davis (Zuniga) and James Ramsbottom (Morales) the local policemen and also Sam Noakes (Danny), Edmund Lange (Remy) and John Franklin (Darren) the gang members. Ellyn Cruxton appeared as an ensemble singer and also busied herself effectively as Lily Pastia the local bar’s landlady.
The musical accompaniment was by Peter Brooks on piano and he should be congratulated for his work.
Well done to everyone involved
