The last production I reviewed was EMS’s production of Godspell back in March 2020, so this was my first production review post lockdown and a great show it was back in a socially distanced Duchess Theatre.
Camp Rock is a 2008 American musical television film from Disney, directed by Matthew Diamond which premiered on Disney Channel on June 20, 2008. Described as a “classic story of rivalry and power” Camp Rock provided EMUS with a great vehicle to show off their performing prowess in vocal, stagecraft and choreographic dimensions which all brought the show to three-dimensional life which thoroughly entertained myself and the whole first night audience.
Right from the first moment, the staging was ideal for this production, the decision to place the Band on stage was just right and gave the cast a great springboard for their vocal and dance talent. It also provided the opportunity for cast members to occasionally become integral parts of the band with a natural flow rather than being clunky or overstaged.
Hayden, Abigail and Chris had obviously done a great job in the Covid-challenged rehearsal period leading up to the production with a great ensemble cast clearly enjoying the performance. I am not going to single out any member of the cast as the strength of this production was the teamwork of all the cast no matter what part they played. In all cases they were as strong in their reaction to other performers as in their own delivery – and that is not an easy skill to master, so congratulations Francesca, Gabryl, James, Harry, Ewan, Katie, William, Rosey, Alice, Sky, Elin, Sinead, Amy, Emma, Eleanor, Joel, Amelia and Niamh
The show was completed with sympathetic lighting, costuming, stage crew and the sound balance was great throughout even with the challenges of youthful voices and a band directly behind the performers.
Yet another highly enjoyable all-round production, which the Erewash team should be suitably proud of. Here’s to Legally Blond in Feb 2022.
