“Calendar Girls” is a play written by Tim Firth and is based on the 2003 film of the same title. It tells the story of a group of friends who belong to the Women’s Institute. When Annie’s husband John dies of cancer, she along with her best friend Chris, resolve to raise money to buy a settee for the hospital waiting room. Together they persuade four fellow members of the Women’s Institute to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar. The play is hilariously funny and at times is very moving …

The direction from Nick Barber was excellent, the casting was superb, the staging was perfect and the play had a great pace throughout. The production was very classy and the nude calendar scenes were very tastefully executed. The six leading actors each gave equally outstanding performances; they were Wendy Hopkins as Cora, Karen Croshaw as Chris, Claire Henson as Annie, Vicki Roberts as Jessie, Beata Azorowicz as Celia and Julie Black as Ruth. There was excellent support from Marian Green in the role of Marie, Angela Warren as Brenda Hulse, Nick Gough as John, Stuart Maher as Rod and Liam, Lydia Le Fer as Lady Cravenshire, Simon Croshaw as Lawrence and Hollie Coles as Elaine. Well done to all the cast, there were some very sincere and well- timed performances.

The sets for this production were excellent and very well dressed. The props were outstanding, well done to Anne, Liz and Jess. The costumes, designed and made Jess were perfect. The lighting and sound quality was excellent throughout the performance.

Congratulations to all at Under the Tower Drama for what was a faultless, extremely funny very moving and highly entertaining performance of “Calendar Girls”.
