It's often said that "the old ones are the best" and this was true of Brechin's excellent production of "Calamity Jane". It's one of those shows where the audience can come away humming the songs - "Black Hills of Dakota", "Secret Love", and others. But it wasn't just the audience who were happy with the show, the cast were also seen to be enjoying the whole experience. In the title role, Gill Smith was in top form, covering the transformation from tom-boy to glamorous lady with ease. Her singing was also a joy. Alan Matheson once more gave an outstanding performance as Wild Bill Hickok and his performances of the well known songs was of an excellent high standard. Young Laura Ferguson has blossomed into a mature performer with a voice and stage presence to match. Robert Forbes also shone as Danny Gilmartin and Steven Middleton gave a hilarious performance as Francis Fryer. The roles of Henry Miller, Susan Miller, Adelaide Adams were in the capable hands of Keith Cuthill, Kerry Guthrie and Caroline Fenwick. Add to this an excellent orchestra, superbly balanced chorus singing and classy choreography and the result was a superb evening of traditional musical. Well done B.A.O.S.!
