This classic musical is full of well-known songs and this talented cast obviously enjoyed singing every one of them and this enjoyment was infectious.
Jenny Barlow-Jennings (Calamity) showed that not only has she got a strong singing voice but she knows how to control it when singing the more gentle songs required in the role. She combined well with Andrew Gilman (Wild Bill Hickok) and Adam Gregory (Lieut. Danny Gilmartin) both of whom have singing voices that are very pleasant on the ear to compliment their fine acting skills. Nicola Downs (Katie Brown) was a delight and together with the principals mentioned formed a good working team. There was plenty of humour from Connor Brooks (Francis Fryer) and he displayed an amazing singing range in this role. He combined well with Natasha Beckett (Susan) as their relationship blossomed. Leanne Smith (Adelaide Adams) made the best of this small but important part once again demonstrating quality vocal talent. There was strong support from Peter Wilkes (Henry Millar), the various ensembles, dancers and chorus with ‘The Black Hills of Dakota’ being a chorus highlight.
All the singing was strong and well supported by an excellent band under the control of Sue Arthur. The production team should be complimented on the staging and choreography of this production as it was slick, colourful and inventive. They were backed up by a very competent lighting and sound team. This together with an excellent set and costumes provided an excellent evening’s entertainment. Well done to all concerned!
