With some rip roaring musical numbers and a love story or two, Calamity Jane is a firm favourite of amateur groups. The Guildhall put their own stamp on the production and created a great evening of toe tapping entertainment.
From the opening of Deadwood Stage Sally Cox was Calamity Jane. Every mannerism and accent twang was performed to a T. Kate Gavin’s gentle Katie Brown was the perfect contrast to brash Calamity. Of course Calamity needs a love interest and the love hate relationship is beautifully played with Paul Barker as Wild Bill Hickok. Add to all this some lovely comedy moments by Francis Fryer (Paul Vickers) and a lively, energetic chorus with some wonderful choreography and you have all the makings of a whip cracking show.
All of the non performance aspects, wardrobe, lighting, set and scenery changes combined together to enhance the production.
The Guildhall was forced into hibernation for 4 years when the theatre closed. This is their second show since that hiatus and we can safely say they are back on the stage with a flourish and a bang.
