"Calamity Jane: The Musical" by Perth Amateur Operatic Society was a first class production fuelled with excellent characterisations and captivating storytelling. It was a delightful and spirited production, showcasing the immense talent within the company. Directed by Kris Mordente, this classic Western musical was brought to life with vibrant performances and impressive production elements.

Libby Poynter shone as Calamity Jane, delivering an outstanding performance. She perfectly embodied Calamity's rough-and-tumble charm and fierce independence, delivering both comedic and emotional moments with aplomb. Her powerful voice shone in numbers like "Secret Love" and "The Deadwood Stage."

Stuart Robertson brought a suave and confident presence to Bill Hickok. His chemistry with Calamity was palpable, and his smooth vocals added depth to his portrayal, particularly in "Higher Than a Hawk."

Ross Jack’s portrayal of the dashing Lt. Danny Gilmartin was convincing and charismatic. His interactions with Kirsty McDonald's Katie Brown were heartfelt, adding a layer of sweetness to the production.

Kirsty McDonald as Katie Brown delivered a standout performance. Her transformation from a timid newcomer to a confident performer was beautifully executed, and her duet "A Woman's Touch" with L was a highlight.

Gavin Russell as Henry Miller provided a solid and humorous portrayal of the beleaguered owner of the Golden Garter. His comedic timing and characterisation was impeccable, adding levity to the production.

Chris Keatch's performance as the bumbling Francis Fryer was a comedic delight. His physical comedy and earnestness in "Hive Full of Honey" were thoroughly entertaining.

Kaitlan Ferguson brought a fresh and youthful energy to Susan, adding to the dynamic of the ensemble and relationship with Francis Fryer.

Janet Anderson as glamorous Adelaide Adams was both elegant and commanding. Her stage presence was magnetic, capturing the audience's attention.

All the performers in supporting roles demonstrated good character and accents and as an audience we were held captivated and engaged by the story unfolding.

Kris Mordente's direction ensured a well-paced and engaging production, while Glen McArtney's choreography was lively and inventive, particularly in the ensemble numbers.

Under the baton of Joe Whiteman, the musical direction was superb. The orchestra delivered a robust and vibrant sound that perfectly complemented the performers.

The static set designed by John Urqhart was fantastic, combined with the lighting effectively creating the world of Deadwood. The swift and efficient work of the stage crew, led by Stage Manager Anne Melville, ensured seamless transitions that kept the momentum of the show. Utopia Costumes did an excellent job bringing the Old West to life with period-appropriate attire that added authenticity and flair to the production.

Each member of the chorus performed with great energy and buckets of enthusiasm. Their lively participation in group numbers like "Windy City" and "Black Hills of Dakota" added to the show's overall exuberance and charm.

Our visit to the Perth Amateur Operatic Society's *Calamity Jane* was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. With strong lead performances, impressive production values, and an enthusiastic ensemble, it was a lovely night that captured the spirit and fun of one of my favourite classic musical.

Huge Congratulations. Thank you for the invite.
