This was a very good production with an outstanding Calamity played by Gina Downing who acted and sang the role very well, giving an absolutely barnstorming, energetic performance. She was well matched by Andy Warner as Wild Bill Hicock, their duets were terrific. There was top class support from the other principals, in particular Catherine Towland as Katie Brown who played her role with equal talent.
Tom Brassington was a superb Francis Fryer, he got every ounce of comedy out of the part. What a good sport this young man was to take on this role. Due to a misunderstanding with the spelling of his name (Frances instead of Francis), when he arrives in Deadwood he is not the glamorous cabaret Henry Miller is expecting, but he agrees to don drag and perform. His rendition of “Hive Full of Honey” was a show stopper and very spectacular.
The company numbers were well executed, both dancing and singing and were performed with great aplomb.
The costumes and scenery were great and the stage crew were very efficient, changing the set with ease. Good lighting added to the overall effect of the production. Very good support was given to the Company by the nine piece orchestra.
