This was a well staged, bright, lively and colourful show providing an excellent evening’s entertainment. Almost every song in the show is well known and many leave the audience singing them as they leave the theatre.
All the principals were secure in their roles with Sam King (Katie Brown) and Will Phipps (Francis Fryer) being particularly impressive. Lydia Lavill was a bundle of energy as the tomboyish Calamity Jane and Timothy Swallow (Wild Bill Hickock) showed us what a rich singing voice he has. Rob Dixon (Danny Gilmartin), Colin Hunt (Henry Miller), Rachel Coleman (Adelaide Adams), Charlotte Poulton-Dowen (Susan) and Alf Rai (Doc Pierce) all ensured that the pace of the action was maintained. It was very pleasant to see several children involved and they were a delight. Although the men’s chorus were few in number they made a good sound and supported some of the songs really well. The chorus singing was strong throughout as was that of all the cast.
There were some very effective ‘pictures’ created on stage and also some very slick choreographed routines, so well done to the production team. The orchestra was of high quality but, at times, the balance wasn’t quite right and it was difficult to hear the underscored dialogue.
The whole production was supported by excellent costumes and effective lighting. Well done to all involved!
