Every Stage2 production impresses me with its unique and authentic interpretation, consistently showcasing the team's signature style. This show was no exception, effectively spotlighting the talents of a diverse cast and crew demonstrating the strengths of youth performance. All technical aspects, including lighting, sound, and stage management, are handled by members of the company. I thought the minimal scenery worked very well and loved the amazing large collage/decoupage hanging used both during the piece on the floor and more visibly for the finale.

Originally written and performed as a monologue by Claire Dowie, this play moves from London to Birmingham. "Buy Little, Buy Less, Buy Nothing at All" is both entertaining and insightful about our superficial wants and needs. Most of the cast remained present on stage throughout the production, maintaining audience engagement through a dynamic, ensemble-driven presentation.

Following a person having some sort of ‘panic attack’ in Primark, they develop shopophobia and set off on a surreal journey filled with supermarket conflicts and dumpster diving. The eleven scenes in the theatre show provide a darkly humorous look at capitalism, identity, and materialism.

The show began with the cast interacting in character whilst chatting in small groups, each person had a carrier bag branded with one of the many different retailers we see on our high streets and in advertising. I spotted everything from designer brand Chloe’ to cut price Aldi and literally pretty much every brand in between. Long hanging rails adorned with coat hangers complete with varied items of clothing were visible upstage, these were soon to be utilised to good effect as not only the dressing room but also to display the many unnecessary ‘Bargains’ encountered on the relentless search to purchase a red scoop neck long sleeved top. No brainer!

The music selections throughout the show were well chosen and encouraged audience participation. I particularly enjoyed the moments when the entire cast stomped in rhythm. Given the size of the ensemble, me listing every participant verbatim and praising individuals would not appear fair—particularly in a play such as this with so many different characters. Nevertheless, all of these young performers deserve credit. Truthfully, I am always left in awe of the talent and energy on display. The entire cast delivered outstanding ensemble work, staying perfectly in sync during moments especially their unified whispers and shouts. Whilst the performance was packed with wit it also featured plenty of truthful, poignant, thought-provoking moments. This is often the case for me when driving home for Stage2 performances, for some unknown reason, even more so this time.
