Butterflies are free is a very well written comedy/drama play by Leonard Gershe. It is based on the 1972 film of the same title and starred Goldie Hawn. The story is set in the 1970’s and tells of a blind man who is living independently for the first time from his overbearing mother; after living in his new home for a month, he meets the woman living next door …
My first impression of the production was the magnificent set; it was very well made and dressed, and was perfect in every way. Congratulations to the set constructor Mark Mortimer and the set designers Weekes Baptiste and Amy Pinto for their excellent work.
Well done to the director, Philip Welch for this well cast and well – rehearsed play, it had a great pace and flowed with ease throughout evening.
The four actors all gave excellent performances. Shaun Milligan as Don Baker gave a very convincing and sensitive portrayal of a blind man; this is not an easy thing to do. Jill Tanner, the quirky wannabe actress who lives next door, was brilliantly played by Rebecca Eigirdas Allan. Mrs Baker, the overprotective mother, was played by Gene McCrystal, she gave a very commanding performance which I enjoyed very much. Graham Breeze who played Ralph Sentor gave a very confidant and imposing portrayal of his character. Well done to you all.
I have already mentioned the splendid set; the props too were excellent and in keeping with the period. The costumes were very good and were authentic of the 1970’s. The lighting and sound quality was excellent throughout the performance. Overall I could find nothing to fault in this highly enjoyable production. Thank you to The Playhouse Theatre for a wonderful evening.
