This is the first time that I have been to visit St Philip’s Junior Workshop and it proved to be a very enjoyable afternoon.
Bugsy Malone is quite a difficult show to produce, as it has so many rapid scene changes but both cast and crew managed these really well under the direction of Mina Kirkbright. Every member of the cast was totally involved in their part, from the very smallest gangster to the most assured Principal performer. There were plenty of smiles on that stage!
Joseph Dickman was a confident Bugsy Malone, playing well opposite Lola Rigby as Blousy Brown- what a strong singing voice she has! These two were supporting strongly by Joshua Parker as Fat Sam and Jessica Barlow as a super-glamorous Tallulah. All Fat Sam’s gang members really looked the part and showed good commitment to their roles.
There are too many cast members to mention individually and many youngsters met the challenge of playing several parts, but it was clear that every single person was enjoying themselves.
The scenery worked well with its different levels, and props were used to good effect to demarcate the changes between different locations.
MD Margaret Stansfield did a great job with the music, keeping it at just the right level for the childrens’ voices and the choreography by Barbara Grant and Liza Rigby was well suited to the era and the style.
Well done, St Philips, and thank you for your hospitality. I hope to see you all again soon.
