I never cease to be impressed by the talent on show in Spotlight Youth Productions. There is a confidence and maturity in the performances of many of these young people. It is refreshing to see the principals of the future working to hone their skills so that they will be ready to take over when their time comes.
It is unusual for a Spotlight production not to open with a full company number, but Alfie Stokes (Bugsy Malone) got the story underway with some well-paced story telling. He also provided the romantic aspect along with Lottie Carter (Blousey Brown). They worked well together both in singing and characterisation. The two opposing gang leaders were entrusted to the talented Becky Cartwright) (Dandy Dan) and James Mason (Fat Sam), and he certainly showed what a good performer he is. They led their respective gangs with authority and there was lots of banter between the gang members. Another cast member with a maturity of voice beyond her years was Emily Hardy (Tallulah) as she fronted the dancers with confidence in her singing and dancing. There was lots of humour provided by the inept police officers played by Reece Hall (Captain Smolsky) and Megan Crosby (O’Dreary). The interaction and timing between Fat Sam and his sidekick Knuckles (Alex Carr) also provided lots of fun. There was also a good rapport between Dandy Dan and Lou (Nadine Hewitt). I also liked the characterisation of Fizzy (Ellie Coleman) as she desperately tried to improve her life by becoming a singer. Nancy Arnold as Lena Marelli burst onto the stage to give a strong rendering of Show Business with the audience wondering where that voice came from. There were so many cameo performances that it is impossible to mention them all. Everyone on stage played a vital part in ensuring that the story was effectively told so you can all give yourselves a pat on the back.
The harmony singing by all the groups and pairings was strong and pleasing to listen to although occasionally the tune was difficult to pick out as the harmonies were stronger than the melody. The dance routines were well planned and confidently executed. There was good use of video sequences to support the story and the effective projection of the ‘back cloths’ allowed quick changes between scenes. The whole production was supported by sympathetic playing from the excellent band and aided by the lighting and sound plots. I also liked the choice of the additional music. Congratulations to everyone for the quality of the evening’s entertainment. Well done!
