Thank you for inviting Phyllis and I to your production of Bugsy Malone. As always we were made to feel very welcome.
The set from Scenic Projects looked good with the different playing levels enabling the show to move at a good pace without the necessity of long scene changes. Unfortunately, where we were sitting, we could only see Fat Sam in his office and not his gang members because we were far right of the prosceneium arch. All the small scene changes and props were moved quietly and efficiently by both crew and cast. The lighting and mics were well operated and the costumes suited the period of the production well.
Harry Basnett’s characterisation and demeanour, playing the role of Bugsy was superb for someone so young. Sometimes it was a little difficult to catch what he was saying, because he was speaking rather too quickly. Katy Harper in the role of Blousy Brown had the right mood throughout. She was particularly good singing, ‘I’m Feeling Fine’, and ‘Ordinary Fool’, her and Harry worked well together. I feel a special mention must go to Lucas Martin in his role of Fizzy, his interpretation of ‘Tomorrow’ really pulled at the heart strings and he was a good mover too. All the other leading characters played their parts very well. The choreography and ensemble numbers were imaginative and well performed, particularly Tallulah and the dancing girls. All the musical numbers were well executed.
The excitement and enthusiasm of the kids was plain for all to see. Very well done to Daniel and all the production team. Thank you for a very enjoyable evening.
