Bugsy Malone was my second visit to see Cloc Youth perform; I must add I felt this choice of show was much more suitable for the age range and experience of the cast.
Sam Farmer was a word-perfect likeable Bugsy playing opposite Sophia Powers as Blousy, her “I’m feeling Fine “was delivered with emotion.
One of my favourite numbers “Tomorrow” generally sung by a male with lyrics about wanting to be a boxer was cleverly changed to reflect a girl singing. Amelia Cartledge was daydreaming about wanting to be a dancer.
Josef Hammond was imposing authoritative character as nightclub owner Fat Sam.
The four club singers Charlotte Whatmore (Tilley) Amber- Mai Davis (Bangles)Beth Sall (Velma) Sophie Griffin (Loretta) owned the stage whenever they appeared in their beautiful fringed flapper dress’s; I loved them.
The star of the nightclub Tallulah was played well by Erin More on the performance I saw.
The chorus numbers were very well executed, the whole company were well rehearsed in the simple yet effective choreography by Miah. The entire nightclub stage was full of talented youngsters so please accept I am unable to mention everyone by name, that said Evie Rice gave a powerful supporting voice especially when she was one of the boxers, she totally captivated the audience.
The music had that fabulous speakeasy sound/feel under the expert direction of Chris and did not overpower the voices at any stage during the evening.
It was such a shame as there were unfortunately sound issues once again at this venue, this was no fault of the production team. There were countless scene changes that hampered the flow somewhat of what is usually a quick whited fast pace show.
You should be very proud of your very enjoyable production, the friendships on that stage shone through, and I’m sure many members of the audience were singing” Fat Sam’s grand slam “and “You give a little Love “on their way home ……I know I was.
Thank you for your hospitality, kindest regards, Joyce
