The Warblers decided to resurrect their junior section after more than 25 years. This was a good production, Bugsy Malone is a brilliant vehicle for a junior group to tackle. In ‘Bugsy’ there are lots of lovely small cameo parts, the show is fun from start to finish with the juniors enjoying every minute of it and I am sure it is the gunge and custard pies they like the best and in this production there was plenty of opportunity for them to enjoy themselves.
Bugsy played by Shay Kennedy was excellent, he had a good accent and interacted well with the audience. His sweetheart ‘Blousey Brown’ played by Beth Holland gave a very polished performance, she has good stage presence and her song ‘Ordinary Fool’ was lovely. Other noticeable performances came from Emily Massam as the vampish Tallulah, and well done to the girl who was always sweeping the stage. Fat Sam alias Brandon Hunter kept his band of merry men in tow very well throughout, and made us all laugh at his troubles with his arch enemy Dandy Dan. Ben Slater was a good Dandy Dan, the mobster boss. ‘The Grand Slam Girls’ all caught the mood of the occasion well as did Dandy’s girls, you all worked very hard, as did ‘The Night Club Dancers’. I also liked Ewan Morrell as Angelo / Barber and Darcey Bowles as Lena Marrelli.
All the cast were great, there was so much enthusiasm and energy from all on stage, you all looked smart and I thought that the attention to detail was excellent. The girl’s hair styles enhanced the production. One of the highlights of the evening was the ‘Chase’ scene, the two cars were very impressive indeed. The whole production team can be well pleased, the set was very effective, the choreography was imaginative and the musicians excellent.
This was a production of fun and vitality that was enjoyed by cast and audience alike. Thank you.
